There are so many interesting places to see and visit here, it just takes a little more exploring than in other well-known destinations. That’s why we love Matara – it’s authentic, not a “tourist hub” ...yet!
It’s an ideal base to explore the wider South Coast region including wonderful beaches on its doorstep.
Whether strolling through the Fort, going up the river spotting crocodiles, or seeing the local monument to the 2008 Tsunami, we have heaps of information on nearby attractions!
Matara has a history going back over 2,000 years. The modern Matara became an important city only during the Dutch occupation as it was used as a main port to export cinnamon and elephants by the colonial masters. Today it is Sri Lanka’s second largest commercial centre after Colombo.
The Fort was built by the in 1640 (see embossed over the main gate.) It was originally called Redoute Van Eck.
Stroll around the streets - check out: the Clock Tower. Dutch Star Fort and Museum. Dutch Reform Church (one of the oldest Protestant churches still in use in the country). Nupe Market.

Pass by the Ruhuna University Campus, an architectural gem designed by Geoffrey Bawa in the late 20th century. Drive on to the bustling port of Dondra, see the Lighthouse., then on to Tangalle. Visit Geoffrey Bawa’s The Last House in Mawella Bay

This temple is the largest temple in the Matara district with extensive. underground tunnels. The 39-metre-tall seated Buddha statue, built 1976, is on a stage shaped as a lotus flower.
At the far end of the courtyard are the steps that lead down to the 600 feet long tunnel complex. All along the walls of the maze of tunnels are fresco art scenes depicting buddha’s life.
